SUSIE SHORT'S –WATERCOLOR BASICS Recommended Supply List for Beginning Students 7 BASIC WATERCOLOR PIGMENTS - 1. A Cool yellow-bias to green- such as Hansa (med PY97); Windsor Yellow (PY175, PY154, PY97); Lemon Yellow (PY3-not Cadmium) 2. A Warm yellow-bias to orange- such as New Gamboge (PY153) or Indian Yellow (PY108) 3. A Cool red- bias to purple-such as Permanent Rose, Quinacridone Rose, (PV19) 4. A Warm red- bias to orange-such as Vermilion (PR188; PR254+PY154) Perinone orange (PO43) Quinacrodone Coral (PR209) Perylene Scarlet (PR149) Cadmium Red hue* 5. A Warm blue-bias to purple-such as Cobalt blue (PB28) Ultramarine (PB29) 6. A Cool blue-bias to green- such as Pthalo blue, Windsor blue, Intense blue (PB15 or PB15:3) 7. A warm neutral (brown) bias to orange- such as Burnt Sienna (PBr7, PR101) or Quinacridone Burnt Orange (PO48) (These are good foundational colors for beginning watercolorists. You will learn to mix all other basic colors from these seven colors. Cadmiums are not recommended as a basic paint for this class; make sure it is marked "hue". Buying artist quality or professional grade paints may cost a little more initially but they will save you $$ in the long run. Brands names include, Windsor Newton, Daniel Smith, Rembrandt, Maimeriblu, DaVinci, Holbein, Daler-Rowney, Sennelier, Graham and Schmincke. 4 WATERCOLOR BRUSHES- Two rounds, one small flat, one larger flat Round #8 (or #10 or #12 with a good point); Aquarelle Flat 3/4"; and a 1 1/2" - 2" Wash brush for larger areas. (Susie uses and sells a 1" cutter brush made from natural hog bristles.) ~OPTIONAL BRUSHES: Additional Round-same size as above or one size smaller, Rigger or script liner, a flat scrubber for lifting, and an inexpensive brush for applying masking fluid. PAPER- I recommend Arches Watercolor 140lb CP 22"x30" minimum of 5 full sheets (to be divided into forty 1/8 sheets.) If you use a 12" x 16” Watercolor Block you will need 20 pages divided in half. (Other acceptable brands are Windsor & Newton 140#CP, Lanaquarelle 140#CP) **Additional miscellaneous required supplies: Magic Rub Eraser (white plastic); Paper support, (drawing board, Masonite, plywood, Plexiglas, corrugated plastic, foam core or gator board.); Clips or Tape (Artist tape, masking tape, package tape) or Thumbtacks to mount the paper to the board. Note: Susie prefers not to stretch her paper. And you will not find it necessary on the exercises. Watercolor Palette (with a lid-Suggested: Jones, Richeson, or Robert Wood. A large white butcher tray or plastic platter will do.) You will also find the following supplies handy: #2 pencil, facial tissues or toilet paper, and paper towels, water container (approximately 1 qt.), scissors, and a straight edge (ruler). “Sharpie” type ultra fine Permanent marker Useful as well as helpful; a good attitude and the desire to learn.
