ABOUT OUR ARTIST OF THE YEAR -
Cathy Geha lives in Fih - Al Koura, Lebanon
Cathy was asked how long she's been an artist and when and where did you start painting with watercolor?
Cathy's reply: Mom had us signed up for art classes when we were in elementary school and I have played with
needlework and other things for many years BUT I did not start with watercolor until March of 2008 and think I
joined WcW about the same time.
Do you have any formal training or are you self-taught?
Self taught – I bought the paint, paper, brushes and some books then tried to figure out what to do. My sister has
given me some one on one time with her when I visit each year but that is it.
When asked about style and choice of subjects to paint Cathy said, Perhaps…experimentation and learning would be
what I lean toward. I do like to paint beads and shoes and things that are not commonly painted. But, I like to pick
up items around the house and put them together, too.

More of Cathy's interview:
Q - Do you have any favorite art supplies that you would like to recommend?
What makes them special to your work?
My favorite paper is probably 140 pound Arches cold press paper and I have some I bring from the USA.
Locally the best was something by Lukas but it has disappeared.
I now use Canson 140 pound watercolor paper if I can’t find or don’t have Arches.
Daniel Smith watercolors are wonderful but I started with Winsor & Newton and they were okay, too.
I learned early that good paper and artist quality paint make a HUGE difference.
Q - Can you recommend any books, videos or other resources that might be of help to new artists?
I found one good youtube video on doing bamboo that was interesting and have looked at various videos
there from time to time. I prefer some of the books I have to others
but think the best resource would be this group (Watercolor Workshop Yahoo Group).
Q - How do you get ideas to create a piece? What inspires you?
I am not sure. I try to do the challenges each month then sometimes branch out from there. I might take
one of the watercolor books I have and try a technique or idea from one of them. I really don’t know if I am
one who gets inspired…maybe not till I am into the painting.
Q - Are there any artists that have influenced your watercolor paintings? What or why?
I don’t think so. My inspiration comes from the Watercolor Workshop group. I keep wanting to grow up and
paint like the great artists in the group…or like my sister. That said…I realize we each have our own unique
styles and trying to emulate someone else will probably only end up being very frustrating.
Q - What medium or mediums do you work with besides watercolor?
I have pastels and pencils and acrylic but don’t really do much with them. Before watercolor there was an
awful lot of needlework and I used to love coloring in coloring books…even as an adult.
Q - Finally, do you have any tips or words of advice for fellow artists?
Do what you love, don’t be afraid to ask for input from the group, and remember it is just
paper and paint and anything is possible…don’t be afraid to play and have fun while learning.
Great Advise! Thanks Cathy! All of us at Watercolor Workshop appreciate your friendship and encouraging words.
CONGRATULATIONS!!!
