ABOUT OUR ARTIST OF THE YEAR -
Bobbi was asked when she started painting in watercolor and her reply was "I have always loved to paint, even as a
child. I was always drawing something and art was always my favorite subject in school. My aunt was my
inspiration. She was a watercolor artist and worked at Hallmark in Kansas City, and I wanted to paint just like her.
I started taking watercolor lessons to help fill the void around 12 years ago after my husband passed away. It has
been a Godsend. I have taken classes from only one teacher since I began, but I've also attended some seminars
here in California with some local artists."
Do you consider yourself a novice or seasoned painter? Bobbi said, "That is a hard one, because even though I have
been painting for such a long time, I am still learning something new with each painting I do. Could I be a
seasoned novice?"
When asked about style and choice of subjects to paint Bobbi said, "I paint very realistically, but my choice would be
to paint in a looser style, but being a perfectionist makes that so difficult. I love to paint flowers and still life the
most, flowers being my favorite. I have done portraits of all my grandchildren except one. I still have to paint one
more granddaughter." Scroll down to read more of Bobbi's interview ....

More of Bobbi's interview....
Q: What makes watercolor "special" to you ?
Bobbi: I think just being able to see my love for watercolor portrayed on paper, and the joy that it brings to
people who see it. There is nothing more special for me than to take a vision of something or image and bring it
to life in watercolor.
Q: Do you work in other mediums also? If yes, what are they?
Bobbi: I have tried oils one time, but always felt that I needed to learn watercolor first because I think that it is
the hardest medium to paint in, and I love the medium so much I don't have a desire to use the others, my
passion will always be watercolors.
Q: What is the best "watercolor tip" ever shared with you?
Bobbi: Once the paint is down, LEAVE IT ALONE, something I still struggle with, because I want to fix everything.
Q: Are there any artists that have influenced your watercolor paintings? What or why?
Bobbi: Not really, although I have always loved Norman Rockwell, so maybe that is why I tend to paint
realistically.
Q: If you could meet and visit with any of the watercolor masters past or present who would they be?
Bobbi: I have always liked Tom Lynch and Charles Reid and would love to attend one of their workshops.
Q: What about their painting style appeals to you? Have you ever seen their work in person?
Bobbi: Not yet! I like the freshness of the paints, and their loose style.
Q: What is your favorite brands of watercolor paint(s)?
Bobbi: Mostly Daniel Smith but I do have some Winsor Newton
Q: If you could only have three tubes of paint what would they be?
Bobbi: Cobalt, Alizarin crimson, and Aureleon
Q: Do you have a favorite watercolor paper?
Bobbi: I like arches rough for most of my paintings, but use cold press for portraits.
Q: Do you have a favorite brush to paint with? Is it natural or synthetic?
Bobbi: I like the Dreamcatcher series by Cheap Joe's. They are a mixture or blend of both I believe.
Q: How long have you had it?
Bobbi: 10 years
Q: Have you ever lost it or misplaced it?
Bobbi: I lost my size 8, and about died until it got replaced.
Q: What is your favorite color? What tube of watercolor paint comes closest to what you would describe as your
favorite color?
Bobbi: Blue.....Either cerulean or manganese blue.
Q: Finally, do you have any tips or words of advice to other artists wanting to paint with watercolor?
Bobbi: I would say practice, practice, practice, and try not to get discouraged. It takes awhile to develop your
style.
